Magehound: Counselors & Kings Book 1
Jon Foster
This painting by Jon Foster was a major stylistic departure for The Forgotten Realms book line. Dungeons & Dragons was undergoing a major new edition overhaul and the book department wanted to modernize their look as well. Foster’s sense of abstract and stylized movement along with his monochrome color pallet are a dramatic shift from the static poses and bright colors of predecessors Clyde Caldwell and Fred Fields. The cover design tried to mirror the unusual balance of Foster’s composition making for an even more dramatic change in the line look. This was a bold and courageous move by the Wizards of the Coast Art Directors.
